Radiators Not Heating
A single cold zone in a system that otherwise heats normally usually has a small fixable cause, so call and say which rooms have gone cold.
When this becomes an emergency
- One upstairs room stays cold while the rest of the house heats fine.
- A baseboard section is warm at one end and cold at the other.
- Gurgling or trickling water can be heard inside the fin tube.
- The last zone on the loop never warms until the boiler has run a long while.
What a pro does
Cold in one place while everything else works points away from the boiler and toward that particular loop. Air trapped at a high point is the leading suspect in hot water systems, and the gurgle inside the fin tube is the tell. Beyond air, a technician checks whether the zone valve is opening, whether the circulator serving that zone is actually spinning, and whether a balancing valve got closed down at some point and never opened back up. Farmhouses that grew an addition often have one long run fed off an undersized loop, which then starves whenever the rest of the house calls at the same time. Fin tube packed with pet hair and dust simply can't give off heat, and that gets checked too.
