What a pro does

Most no-heat calls end somewhere upstream of the equipment itself. Power comes first: a tripped breaker, a blown fuse in the disconnect, or the emergency switch at the head of the cellar stairs will make a perfectly healthy boiler look dead. Fuel comes second, and a tank run empty needs the line primed and often the filter changed, not just a delivery. After that the sequence runs through the thermostat circuit, the aquastat or control board, and whichever safety opened to stop things, because a control doing its job accounts for more of these calls than a part that's actually failed. Guessing at parts before the sequence is walked wastes the visit.

It's a required emergency shutoff for the burner, and flipping it cuts power instantly. Someone brushing past it in a dark stairway is a surprisingly common cause of a total outage.
It usually is. Drawing the last of a tank pulls sediment toward the filter and lets air into the line, so the burner needs to be bled and the filter looked at before it will run right.
Once is reasonable. If it trips straight back, something is drawing current it shouldn't, and repeated resets risk damage to the control.
It narrows things considerably: the thermostat has power, so the question moves to the wiring between it and the equipment, or to the equipment's own controls.
